Just a Thought!

April 29, 2010

hey you, you big big dot!
you look confused, something you forgot?
sit down, just give it some thought
clear your head, think of the plot
then get your ass up, back in the ring
on your toes, now show me what you got!

Democracy revisited

March 8, 2010

A good friend of mind got me into this. He suggested a better model for democracy. There were a few things which I found quite alarming in his suggestion. I gave my views and he didn’t take it quite well. A few other friends gave similar response as mine. But he kept criticizing us back saying we are not looking for merits but just flaws. I think he was right in a way.

The biggest merit if his model is that it counters the biggest shortcoming in direct democracy, that is that people who are ignorant about the consequences of voting for any given candidate, get to vote, and their vote counts just as much as that of those who know exactly what they are doing.

I think that’s an idea worth chasing so let’s work on this thing.

The main flaw I see with his model is that it assumes that intelligent people are ideal people. I don’t buy that.

I propose that we amend the model with another goodness factor. Now intelligence and goodness will be two independent variables. Value of anyone’s vote depends on both.

Regarding the voters.

There is no minimum age to vote. Instead you should only be allowed to vote if you pass a certain knowledge exam. This exam should be a part of our education system like board exam followed by an interview. Interview is to make sure that one cannot just mug the syllabus without understanding the context and become eligible to vote. Another approach is surprise test methods (in which one can only score if prepared all the time). In this case, one will randomly get a phone call and will be asked his/her credentials (like unique identification number etc) to confirm that the person is correct. Then in next 10 minutes one has to answer a few quick fire questions which will later be used to determine whether one should be allowed to vote or not.

Also, there is no legal obligation to vote but if someone misses turn once, next time his/her vote has lesser weightage.

Voting Mechanics

Unlike page rank one cannot vote as much as he/she want. Let’s say one can vote for a maximum of “n” candidates. Obviously voting will be normalized. (i.e. if someone votes for 4, each vote will be counted as 0.25 vote and then further multiplied by his/her weightage). But voting is sector wise. What sectors mean is that before each election, main issues are highlighted by various agencies like planning commission in India etc and all candidates are required to give opinion in those issues first. For example, in India, main issues as of today are poverty, illiteracy, bad infrastructure, inefficiency in agriculture, energy etc.

Each candidate standing in election is supposed to have an opinion on these issues before local issues in his manifesto. Now when a voter votes, he will vote for candidate tagging the issue name to candidate’s name for which the voter thinks the candidate is most suitable. If you vote for only one guy, he is obviously tagged in all issues. If you vote for say “n” guys, you tag them as you want. However, if you tag two guys on same issue, it gets normalized. Issues in turn will have preset weightage (not known to general public) and this will be used in final count as tiebreaker (if needed).

Calculating Weightage

Also, now we come to the most important part of all, calculating weightage.

Whenever one votes, one gives references for himself. There will not be any class of intelligent people as calculated by the system who get more weightage. Instead, for each vote, one needs to give reference of someone who can vouch for him/her (at least one). The person who has been referred should accept the reference. More influential the person who can vouch for someone is, more the influence he/she gets. However, if an influential person refers more than one person, it gets normalized again. System calculates everything and there is no human intervention in this process. This direct reference gives you a lot of influence. Same will be applied for goodness too.

The person who gives reference to you, his goodness matters in the goodness of your vote. And so on.

However, there is another way to gain influence or goodness. A forum will be created under the system in which each individuals profile will be created. Here, politically minded people can give their opinion and promote them. The more people approve of ones opinions the more ones vote counts. (This also ensures that some random guy who doesn’t have a clue but simply votes for someone, will get not much value as he won’t get good reference and since he has no opinion of his own, not many will approve of him). Also, individuals will have some linkdin kind of reference system to measure goodness. Whatever you do, update on system and people will approve it if they like it. To make this water tight, approvals will also be normalized. So one can’t just go on an approval spree in the system. Now as for weightage, goodness*influence in weightage. Infact i think goodness should have higher value as that’s what is more important. We can argue on that but lets take it later.

Election

This voting process will be used to elect the senate which will be a large body. By now we have ensured that this senate has only the intelligent and good people. This senate then can directly elect the government.

This is just a pre- draft of this model. The next major task for me now is to come up with a mathematical model for this. I’ll take it up in my next post.
All suggestions / criticism are most welcome.

Natural Born liar

November 24, 2009

There was once a boy
who was such a cheat,
He was the master
of fraud and deceit

everything that he said
was so full of lies,
every time someone bought it
there was shine in his eyes

It was not as if
he had something to hide,
whenever he spoke
he had spontaneously lied

Addict to the drug
of plain deception,
and he was high all time
with no exception

he would lie innately
and with immense skill
and if he could pull it off,
feel the greatest thrill

at the grand triumph
of his art of deception,
of his quick wits and
his depths of perception

and he lived his life
faking himself out,
lying and deceiving
everywhere about

and one fine day
there was this girl,
who’s just one sight
made his universe twirl

he saw her that day
in the local bookshop,
her every move
made his heart stop

he looked at her
with wide open eyes,
her voice echoed
deep into the skies

she was so lovely
her smile so sweet
she was, he thought,
he couldn’t possibly cheat

and his face hardened
and his eyes gleamed,
“I’ll never lie to her!

his heart screamed

but how could he ever
get to talk to her
she was such a pretty girl
and he was a loafer

and he couldn’t now
just hide this fact,
he couldn’t just go
and break the pact

he made with his
inner conscience,
though his instincts pushed
but he stood in defiance

he went up to her
gave a silly grin
“it’s a nice book”

just came from within

but then he had
actually read that one,
so he didn’t have to lie
as he could have done

she smiled back
perhaps she understood,
they had a little chat
and he felt good

her voice was light
like a long lost song,
he felt the waves
and he rode along

he didn’t care
what he was taking about,
but he wanted to talk
he had no doubt

in a few minutes
he dreamed castles in air,
but he didn’t lie
that much I swear

but it was slowly
getting onto him,
to control any longer
he felt the chances slim

he tried to close
the conversation then,
he said goodbye
and had just turned when

she gave a shout
and sweetly said
hey what’s your name?:
ringed in his head

he stopped still
and turned back,
as he tried to speak
it made him quack

his hands trembled
his throat dried,
his heart pounding
like a devil inside

he was in a panic
but still he tried,
he thought of his name
but then .. he lied

And she smiles ..

November 11, 2009

It was a boring day
uneventful and futile
and i had no hope
of anything worthwhile

and then i saw her
quite angry and hostile
i think the rickshaw wala had
overcharged her by a mile

and as she entered
I couldn’t help but smile
as even her anger
had such a style

but my lame grin
didn’t do any good
i appreciated her attitude
but she misunderstood

she gave me a cold stare
with her big round eyes
and then and there i realized
messing with her was not wise

The whole damn class
i kept peeking at her
the otherwise interesting lecture
seemed so very blur

every time she saw me
staring at her side
i would quickly look away
feeling embarrassed inside

but every now and then
she caught me in the act
i couldn’t look away from her
and that was the fact

she was indeed
such a pleasant surprise
she was that day
the cynosure of all eyes

and then at last
the darn lecture ended
dunno about the arithmetic
but the class was splendid

she closed her notebook
but she still had that frown
and as she left
her pen fell down

I jumped at the chance
and picked up it then
and like a lame duck said
“Is this your pen?”

I still remember how
my heart went wild
i cannot ever forget
the moment she smiled
!

The thief and the maiden

November 7, 2009

One cold cruel dark night
He was by the roadside
Thinking how he might just,
die of hunger and frostbite

He looked up with weary eyes,
saw the clouds darken the skies
He shivered as he lay still
waiting for the sunrise

He cursed the cruel world
and all the rich full of vice
who lived in their glittering villas
built upon his blood and cries

They had their sumptuous feast
merry in their warm, cozy halls
He was out in the street
staring at those gigantic walls

His eyes flared with a cold fire
His face as hard as stone
His breath slow and measured
In his mind was a cyclone

There was a huge manor
And a lovely maiden it had
She was indeed the prettiest
But she was also sad

Out she looked of the window
and saw a night bird on a  tree
and she gave  a light sigh
as unlike her the bird was free

She thought of the world outside
where so many people walk
She wondered maybe same day
She would go with them and talk

She suddenly saw a shadow
and the hour was late
Suddenly she was not alone,
there was someone out the gate

He was a man her age
A thief with a bloody nose
but his eyes were gentle
He saw her and he froze

A strange look on his face
She didn’t know to shout or not
There was a noise from behind
and then she heard a shot

She gave a cry and stepped back
He was now on his knees
He was still looking at her
when guards came out of trees

He was down on the floor,
the stolen bread by his side
He felt warmth upon him,
swooping him like a tide

He thought of the cruel world,
He thought of his doom,
He thought of that angel face,
He saw inside the room

And then behind the glass window,
He saw the maiden teary eyed,
He closed his eyes and smiled,
He thought of her and then he died

Bitter Man’s Ultimatum

October 6, 2009

Every day all the time
Why the fuck do you smile?
What is that around you,
That you feel is worthwhile?

Everything is good my friend
Every body’s just nice
And as for my smile
Life needs some spice!

Life needs some fucking direction
Life needs a goal
It’s not like some random walk
You need to have control

Life is an open canvas
Life is a song
One should just let it flow
One should ride along

You can’t just let it flow
It takes you nowhere
You need to toil hard
You need to prepare

But what if I don’t want,
to go anywhere
What if I just want,
to sit and to stare?

And you want to do just that,
for the rest of your life?
Like some pathetic loser,
who I think deserves the knife!

Why is that you think so,
That such man’s life’s a waste
Who appreciates the world around,
And has better taste

Who is not running after,
every other blind target
Who lives life at his own pace,
Slowly without haste

What is that he lives for,
A man without a sight
Mark my words he is nothing but,
A live human blight

How is he any better,

than any thoughtless beast?
Just alive for the sake of it,
at the very least

What’s wrong if he lives for,
just his own pleasure?
What’s wrong if he is in bliss?
After all life’s a treasure!

What’s wrong if he finds the world,
fascinating, intoxicating
and takes time to appreciate,
each summer spring?

How long and to what end,
is living like that?
In absence of desire,
he not a man he is rat

Living for the sake of it,
is easy and disgusting
living like a common feral,
is not a manly thing

This purpose that you talk about,
its nothing but a chain
it drags your life along,
and fills it with pain

why unnecessary complicate,
when life is so simple
its like merry placid waters,
where purpose is a rimple

come on now! just face it,
you’ve got to some day!
you can either run from it
or stand up to it you may!

get out of the comfort zone,
stand up and fight
look around and find your aim,
until its there in sight

What the hurry what’s the rush,
there nothing I have to face
After all I have my destiny,
I have my very own place

I have a life full of joy,
full of warmth and fun
I don’t need any weekly reminders,
I don’t have to run

You can either run away,
From everything that you fear
either you can run towards,
Whatever you desire my dear!

So, life is a race alas,
Everything else is a lie
You better start running today,
Or as Drawin said you will die

So, stand up now, on your feet,
And seize the momentum
It’s not advice, not this time,
It’s a bitter man’s ultimatum

I am infact the first guy,
and like him, I feel free
and I do hate the bitter man
but alas, even he is me!

Run Lallu Run !!

September 13, 2009

Another day another week
Time passes by
another groan another squeak
and every day I sigh

Fancy chair, fancy place
but fucking life is so dry
And if I say I am ok with it
that would be a lie

I feel like there is so much to do
there is so much I can try
but half a day in a rat trap
and on that I wear a tie

And that day i was pissed, to the core
I was pissed sky high!
And I was so very pissed
and think you know why

And I  didn’t know what to do
And I was burning inside
And I all of my emotions
like oiled ammonium nitride

And I decided for time being
to keep all that aside
And I decided to later
take it out, roadside

And it did me, a lot good
as it did hold the tide
though it couldn’t stop me
showering around many a snide

But it was, a really long day
and it took me for a ride
and it was, a long long day
and that didn’t help my pride

Dark was the hour when i begun
it was hot and humid and not at all fun
but there i was, on the road
and there i was, in the run

I looked for people but there were none
I was in fact the only one
but I was fast and i was on the road
and I didn’t really care for anyone

And many a streets i did overrun
and many a lanes i did shun
and many a miles I measured till
I couldn’t feel my legs and I had sweat a ton

But I had to go on, I had to run
I had to feel, I had to gun
Hoping for the dawn, of my morning
of gentle breeze and of rising sun

You think you had a funny day?

July 19, 2009

Its fascinating at times how things get stuck to your mind. No matter how hard you try, no matter what you do, no matter how occupied you are, its still out there at the back of your head, like a tiny flame in total darkness, inviting you towards it! And its unbelievable you know, you are there sitting on the comfortable chair, you are occupied, you have calls to take, presentation to give, conferences to attend and bigshots to please but no, no sir no, its still out there, inside your brain I mean, stuck. Its like a butterscotch double scoop in a hot Chennai afternoon, like Yasmine Bleeth on the shiny silvery sand you know, you can think of it once but you are stuck with the image whole day.

And its irritating. I mean its a really stupid thing to do. Why the hell would any sane person want to do that? Its totally insane and ridiculous and there are way important things in your life. But that’s immaterial as long as you don’t do it. It keeps coming back. Something is seriously bothering you here. You are now in a conference call, trying to convince everyone to stick to your proposed solution even though it totally sucks, and suddenly Bham! again .. fuck man! Its like an elephant inside your head and you cannot ignore it no more. What the hell is wrong with you today? You finish the call and start thinking. Well you gotta do what you gotta do. So you start for home a little early and while sitting in the bus you think about the day, hoping against hopes that maybe the madness will come to an end. In the meantime you spot a hot girl on the other side of the road and totally forget about the “thing” for a few happy moments. Now that she is no more in sight so you are back to where you were, yeah contemplating! But that didn’t help just as you had feared it won’t.

And then you decide, out of frustration, to do “it” while just making sure that no one ever finds out you did it. Yeah its a deal with yourself. You reach home and now you are feeling excited. You can smell the blood inside your veins. In the matter of seconds, You are all charged up, your heart rate increases, you involuntarily flex your muscles and are walking slow and measured steps. All voices around you seem to have faded. You are amazed at your own transformation and think that perhaps you are so focused that you could listen to your own heart beat, even while your head held high. But that turns out to be a long shot. So your focus back to the task in hand.

You open your bag and take out your laptop. It makes a little sound while its starts and surprisingly it gets you high. You feel cold on a hot and humid day. You take a deep breath, close you eyes, think about the hot girl you saw on the way back home and smile while you open your eyes. You start the browser and surf to that website and to that particular post. You are irritated when its doesn’t load up at once and were thinking about trying google cache when it shows up.

http://www.bspcn.com/2009/07/17/best-paper-ever/

Well now you type first 3 lines in a notepad and convert binary to decimal. After you do that you convert the decimal to alphabetical by substituting them in alphabetical order (ie a for 1 and J for 10). Now you are in a fix. What about 21? is it “b+a” or is it “u”? you think about morse code and try to forget that as fast as you can. You then underline such words and keep a track of possibilities. Now you read what you have. Does it make any sense? Nope, not in any combination! cool! And now you are happy again!

PS:- In my defense, I will just say that it was a really boring day at work and also I feared that if I didn’t do it, I would lose my powers.

PPS:- I didn’t try all combination :)

How do you convince yourself?

July 3, 2009

My man! My champ, you’re looking good
You weren’t happy last time, i have understood
But i got an idea which will light up your mood
We’ve got to do this or we’ll get screwed

Growl howl bark whine
Do what you can you filthy swine
All your crap, hardly worth a dime
I ain’t listening to you this time

Oh come on now, this is not fair
We had fun last time, when we were out there
I accept the fact that it was a messy affair
But this is so much better, such ideas are rare!

To hell with your idea, your wicked plan
The day you were born, all evil began
Before I strangle you, run as fast as you can
And don’t make me hear your voice ever again

I get it now that you are still upset
Last time was a mistake that even i regret
But just listen to this plan and you’ll no more fret
As it is fool proof and you can check it up on net

What should i do to make myself clear
Just get out of my head, cant you hear
Your plans are evil and you are insincere
You’ll screw me up and then disappear

Never will i ever, harm you my brother
You and I are in this together,
Pranks we shall play one after the other
We are destined to do this forever

Cheesy lines and cajolery
Do you really think that I cannot see?
Through your empty words and flattery
And to believe in you, I just cant agree

Don’t believe, just reason
If you smell a rat, I’ll accept it as my treason
If only you could have my vision
Its harmless innocent playful mission

Please stop now for your words are venom
To believe in you I must be really dumb
I am tired of you and scared of the outcome
However you try i am not going to succumb

No no my friend, its your decision
Dont mistake my eagerness as persuasion
First listen to me and fire very question
And i guarantee you total satisfaction

Leave me alone, please don’t say no more
Following you again, even the thought i abhor
I remember last time, my wounds are still sore
Just leave me in peace, this much i implore

Forget the past, it was sheer bad luck
This time we shall ride down like a truck
We shall trample the earth while we dance amok
And maybe we can make an easy buck

I don’t know man that does sound good
But i am scared of what you would
land me into if you got in mood
I hope you wont get me screwed

No tricks this time, you can be assured
Every thing is so clear, and nothing obscured
I promise you that i have indeed matured
With every setback that we have endured

I cant believe that i have agreed
To believe in someone who makes me bleed
Every time it comes and then misleads
And then leaves me in a stampede

Yes! oh yes! you have done the right thing
Follow me and you shall feel the zing
Do what i say and I’ll make you a king
My praises forever you will sing!

and there he goes again!
